Background of the Study
Strategic human resource management (SHRM) involves aligning HR practices with organizational goals to enhance workforce performance and retention. In health institutions, effective SHRM is critical for maintaining a skilled and motivated workforce, especially in environments with high turnover rates and workforce shortages (Okonkwo & Yusuf, 2024).
In Benue State, health institutions face challenges such as inadequate compensation, limited career development opportunities, and poor working conditions. These factors contribute to employee turnover, negatively impacting service delivery and organizational performance. SHRM provides a framework for addressing these challenges and improving employee retention (Ali & Musa, 2023).
This study examines the impact of SHRM on employee retention in health institutions in Benue State, focusing on practices that foster long-term engagement and job satisfaction.
Statement of the Problem
High employee turnover is a significant challenge for health institutions in Benue State, affecting service quality and operational efficiency. Many of these institutions lack strategic HR practices to address issues such as job dissatisfaction, burnout, and lack of professional growth opportunities (Bello & Suleiman, 2025).
Despite the importance of SHRM, there is limited research on its role in enhancing employee retention in health institutions within this context. This study aims to fill this gap.

To analyze the impact of SHRM on employee retention.
To identify challenges and recommend strategies for improving SHRM practices.
